Course Overview
An MTS Restricted Permit Holder is a person trained and authorised by MTS to hold an MTS electrical permit on 1500v direct current overhead wire.
An Electrical Qualification is not required for this role however candidates must demonstrate a sound understanding of electrical hazards.
What Electrical Permit Holder (Restricted) Authorisation Allows:
- Accept an Electrical Permit to Work on the 1500V DC network in the rail corridor only
- No work on HV AC cables within the rail corridor
- No work inside substations or cables outside of the rail corridor
- No work or supervision of persons working inside substation
As a person entering and working in the rail corridor you have a responsibility to read and understand relevant sections of the Metro Trains Sydney Electrical Safety Rules. These sections include:
- Hazards and Warnings
- Safe Approach Distances
- Access for Work on or Near Electrical Equipment
- Roles and responsibilities of Permit Holders
- Issue, accept, hold and return of Electrical Permits
- Alterations to Electrical Permits
- Adjacent LIVE is listed in section 5 “SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS and WARNINGS”
- If a permit is to be issued within 200m of LIVE OHW Permit Holders will be “instructed” on site
Note: At completion of this course you will be considered to be an Instructed person for Safe Approach Distances (SAD’s)
WARNING: Permit Holders are responsible to ensure members of their workgroup do not encroach upon the Safe Approach Distances for adjacent live equipment.

- Please wear full PPE (Long sleeve shirt, Long trousers, Steel capped boots, High visibility vest or shirt, Hard Hat)

- Please ensure you have completed the eLearning. (You will not be issued with a certificate and you will not be authorised until it is)
Prerequisites
Before commencing this course, you must;
- Have successfully completed the MTS Electrical Safety Awareness (MESA) online
- Have successfully completed the MTS Introduction to Rail Safety (MIRS) online
- Hold a Rail Industry Worker card
- Demonstrated a need to hold an MTS Electrical Permits to Work
Certification
Upon satisfactory completion of assessment participants will be issued a Statement of Attendance for MTS Permit Holder Restricted Training (85742).
Pipeline Training will upload your certification to your RIW profile and you will receive a soft copy by email.
You will need to contact your administration and ask that they add the following MTS Job Roles to your RIW profile if this has not already been done.

Candidates seeking certification with MTS for Electrical Permit Holder Restricted are required to meet the requirements set out below from Electrical Certifications for Instructed and Authorised Persons
