Course Overview

This intensive three-day course is designed for individuals seeking to gain or enhance their skills in operating boom-type elevating work platforms (EWPs) with a reach of 11 meters or more. Tailored for both beginners and experienced operators, this program combines theoretical knowledge with practical training, ensuring participants are fully prepared for the operational challenges and safety considerations associated with boom-type EWPs.

Course Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand and apply the relevant health and safety regulations and standards associated with the operation of boom-type EWPs.
2. Assess operational capabilities and limitations of boom-type EWPs.
3. Conduct routine checks and maintenance to ensure the safe operation of the equipment.
4. Operate a boom-type EWP safely in various conditions, following operational plans and manufacturer’s instructions.
5. Respond effectively to emergencies and malfunctions while operating the EWP.

Course Content:

• Day 1-2: Training

  • Introduction to boom-type EWPs and industry regulations.
  • Understanding the risks and safety requirements associated with EWPs.
  • Pre-operational checks and maintenance procedures.
  • Hands-on training: operating the EWP under various conditions and tasks.
  • Emergency procedures and hazard management.

• Day 3: Assessment

  • Written assessment: testing theoretical knowledge on safety, operations, and emergency response.
  • Practical assessment: demonstrating competence in operating a boom-type EWP safely and effectively.

Final assessment MUST be conducted by an accredited SafeWork NSW certified assessor to be certified for a High Risk Work (HRW) LO class licence.

Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). Visit Service NSW website for further info.

What you need

• the following forms provided by your assessor:
  • the 'Application for a national licence to perform high risk work – New application' form
  • the original orange and white copy of your Notice of Satisfactory Assessment (NSA)
• proof of identity – see Evidence of identity – PDF
• a passport-quality photograph with your name, date of birth and signature on the back (verified by your assessor)
• your current HRW licence (if you have one)
• your payment.

How to apply

You must apply within 60 days from the date of issue of your NSA.

1. Complete the application form provided by your assessor, but do not sign it.
2. Gather together:
   • the orange and white NSA
   • the identity documents and photograph your assessor verified
   • your unsigned application form
   • your current HRW licence (if applicable)
   • your method of payment.
3. Select the 'Find an Australia Post office' button.
4. Select 'More services' and filter by:
   • 'Identity and document services'
   • 'Licence to perform high risk work – NSW (New and Renewal)'.
5. Visit your chosen Post Office and lodge your application.
