This comprehensive course provides essential training for individuals required to enter and work in confined spaces while adhering to permit-to-work systems. Participants will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to safely operate in hazardous environments, including confined and enclosed spaces, by understanding the procedures for gas testing, permit compliance, and emergency response.
The course covers:
- Safe entry and work procedures in confined spaces
- Understanding and working in accordance with issued permits
- Conducting atmospheric gas testing using specialized equipment
- Monitoring compliance with work permits
- Responding to emergencies, including performing CPR
Ideal for operational staff, contractors, and maintenance personnel, this training ensures participants are equipped to manage confined space risks and perform their roles safely and effectively.
Training Agenda
Course Introduction & Housekeeping
- Time: 7:30 AM – 7:45 AM (15 minutes)
- Objective: Quick overview of all units, safety protocols, and the day’s structure.
- Content: Confined spaces, permits, gas testing, CPR, and the role of the observer in permit work.
- Outcome: Learners are aware of the training objectives and expectations.
Enter and Work in Confined Spaces
- Time: 7:45 AM – 9:15 AM (1 hour 30 minutes)
- Theory:
- Overview of confined space hazards, legislation, emergency procedures.
- Equipment usage: PPE, breathing apparatus, and entry protocols.
- Knowledge Assessment.
Morning Break
- Time: 9:15 AM – 9:30 AM (15 minutes)
Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit & Observe Permit Work
- Time: 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM (1 hour)
- Theory:
- Permit systems: types, roles, and responsibilities under a permit.
- The observer’s role in monitoring and ensuring compliance with permit conditions.
- Knowledge Assessment.
Gas Test Atmospheres
- Time: 10:30 AM – 11:15 AM (45 minutes)
- Theory (30 minutes):
- Gas testing procedures, equipment, and how to interpret gas test readings.
- Knowledge Assessment.
- Practical Training and demonstration (15 minutes):
- Bump Testing and Gas Testing procedures.
Practical Sessions Begin Here
Practical Training for Confined Space Entry, Permit Work & Gas Test Atmospheres
- Time: 11:15 AM – 12:00 PM (45 minutes)
- Practical:
- Complete Hazard Assessment and Emergency Plan.
Lunch Break
- Time: 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM (30 minutes)
Practical Continued:
- Time: 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM (1.5 hours)
- Practical Tasks:
- Read, complete, and sign on to Permit.
- Inspect Harness and Confined Space Rescue Equipment.
- Perform gas testing using equipment, document findings, and ensure the atmosphere is safe.
- Execute confined space entry and exit procedures using PPE.
- Assessment: Practical demonstration of confined space entry, permit work, and gas testing.
- Issue and monitor a work permit for confined space entry, ensuring compliance with conditions.
- Role-playing scenarios to practice permit issuance and compliance observation.
- Simulate confined space tasks under controlled conditions.
HLTAID009 - Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Time: 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM (1 hour)
- Theory (30 minutes):
- ARC guidelines for CPR, including defibrillation.
- Knowledge Assessment.
- Practical (30 minutes):
- Perform CPR on mannequins, practice defibrillator use.
- Assessment: CPR practical demonstration.
Review and Close
- Time: 3:15 PM – 3:25 PM (10 minutes)
- Q&A Session: Quick recap of key points and practical assessments.
- Final Assessment: Ensure all assessments are completed.
- Wrap-up: Issue certificates and provide feedback.
Prerequisites
NIL
You will need:
- Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- 100 points ID (e.g. Passport & drivers licence 0R Birth Certificate & drivers licence -check web for combinations OR check online for other options). One must be a photo ID.
Certification
Upon satisfactory completion of assessment participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency:
RIIWHS202E - Enter and work in confined spaces
MSMPER200 - Work in accordance with an issued permit
MSMPER202 - Observe permit work
MSMWHS217 - Gas test atmospheres
HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Location
Our training facility is conveniently situated in Rouse Hill on Annangrove Road, making it easily accessible for students from various suburbs in Sydney. Specifically, students from the Hills District and Hawkesbury areas will find our location particularly convenient for their needs.
